IAML currently has about 2,000 individual and institutional members in some 45 countries throughout the world. IAML (Australia) currently has 63 members. Founded in 1951 to promote international cooperation and to support the interests of the profession, IAML is a respected member of the international library and music communities. It has national branches in 22 countries, five professional branches, four subject commissions and various working groups, and is responsible for several large-scale documentation projects.

The membership comprises major music collections, music and audio-visual librarians, music archivists and documentation specialists, musicologists, music publishers and dealers. Membership is open to any person or institution interested in the work of the Association. English, French and German are the official languages.

Membership includes subscription to Fontes Artis Musicae (the quarterly international periodical), Continuo (the annual national journal), Intermezzo (the quarterly national newsletter) and access to email lists for Australia and New Zealand and internationally.  Members meet for a national conference every two years. The international conference is held annually. Members also meet in each state where appropriate, to encourage discussion and debate on music collection issues. Your membership also entitles you to nominate and to vote for candidates for State Representative and the National Executive.
